If you watch his performance at the Cardiff Singer of the World contest when he was in his 20's, his supreme confidence and assurity on stage is unbelievable! It's just as he says in this interview when he indicates he was very confident as a singer in his youth.

"Nedda is not a good girl. She doesn't deserve my voice." Lady Macbeth on the other hand....lol It's okay not to like a role, whether because of the character or the music. But don't give me that moral judgment BS as a reason. Lady Macbeth is a criminal, dare I say downright a psycho. Nedda is an angel compared to her. lol The difference is that as a character Lady Macbeth is more interesting and the music is way better. It's Verdi, enough said. Having said that, the only Verdi role Scotto could sing decently was Gilda. She was never a Verdi singer. In general, she had a very good timbre and fraseggio. She had a great career, mainly in US, so chapeau to that, but she was overrated, IMO. Scotto started as a soprano lirico leggero, and as such she was good. She could never become a great soprano drammatico d'agilità, despite her going in that direction. As for her comments about being a Callas admirer, I call BS. lol It is famous her behavior after la prima dei Vespri, during 1970-’71 season at La Scala, and the interview she gave after, whining about Callas who was a guest of La Scala's superintendent, and was sitting on his box. All that venom from Scotto towards Callas (attacking Callas on personal level too) just because the Loggione gave to Callas a thunderous applause at the second interval. The applause transformed into an ovation at the exit of via Filodrammatici, with the crowd of fans shouting "Maria, Maria". That didn't sit well with la "Diva" Scotto and she was all poison towards Callas. You can still find that interview on internet "Gli applausi si fanno a chi sta sulla scena!" is the title. When confronted by the loggionisti regarding that interview, not only she didn't deny it but she also said that the journalist had cut off some parts, and she even called them "finocchi", basically declaring war against the loggionisti callasiani, which obviously she couldn't win. When Scotto was back for la replica and would sing “Arrigo, ah parli a un core” the loggionisti reaction was "miao", and shouting at her “scema, Verdi non è Donizetti”. So by the end of December, la Scala had to changer her and Gencer was the new singer, and Scotto never sang at La Scala after than, apart from a concert by the end of June 1985.

What I think of while watching and listening is how well he speaks English, how generous he is with his responses, and, OMG why did he get a brain tumor and die so soon. He had so many plans for the future of his career, and he has been denied that and so have we, and his family and children as well. Sadness, great sadness! Just so thankful that he recorded so much and that we can listen to him whenever we want through his recordings. He was always generous with his voice and his talent.

It was so nice to see this talk. I read the book "Owaranai Natsu," " never ending summer" in English, written by Ozawa's daughter. Though I never had a chance to listen to Maestro Ozawa's live performance, but this interview helps me understand how music has been passed on and carry on to the next generation.

Bychkov is very intelligent.

I have the enormous blessing of being born with a passion for music. I remember lying down on the floor with my ears close to the loudspeaker of a new radio my father had bought (I was 9 or 10 years old, and I'm 83 now) absolutely enthralled by some music I never had heard and didn't know what it was. Later I found out it was Brahms 4th. My family was surprised and a little bored by that as they didn't have a drop of musicality in their blood and all wanted to listen to other things. But I couldn't avoid the feeling, the yearning, the love, and whenever I could I would tune the only classical radio station in existence. Recently, thanks to UA-cam, I have been paying more and more attention to Bychkov as I find his conducting very similar to the one I would do if I had had the good fortune of being a conductor instead of a scientist (nothing wrong with it, though). His performances of Chostakovitch symphonies are the best I've heard. Opera is not my first love although I keep "visiting" some of them frequently (recordings, obviously). Curiously, like Bychkov three of my favourite operas are Oneguin, Carmen and (not Traviata, hélas) but Bohéme. And others, of course, like Rosenkavalier (perhaps the opera I've seen and heard more times), Salome, Boris Godunov (Rimsky Korsakov version) and so on, and on....

He is a fabulous talent, just found him and then lost him to death. A horrible loss and shame.

What a wonderful man and son! Eastern European parents are different. It is not common to tell the children that they are wonderful! Instead they would say: yes,… but!….😂ˋ maybe this has changed, but it happened to me a lot. Whenever I was complemented for any reason my mother would immediately respond with yes…. But…. I raised my children differently, and they still did not turn out spoiled!
